'(Radio) Mirchi Masterclass': Breaking the Mold

"How many of you disagree that MEDIA today is like AIR, WATER, and SUNSHINE?" 🎙️

I recently stood in front of a microphone at Mirchi's Film City studio and threw this question out to the room. I paused, scanning the crowd, waiting for a hesitant hand.

But not a single hand went up.

In that exact moment, I knew I had the undivided attention of the room. But this wasn’t your usual student crowd. It was a room of mixed demographics: young executives, school teachers, retirees, college grads and the like. In other words it was not a specific, narrow demographic.

In that this masterclass was a complete mold-breaker.

When the Audience Redefines the Classroom

Typically, when you are invited to deliver a masterclass, you receive a briefing on the exact background of your attendees. You tailor your slides, your vocabulary and your case studies to a very specific persona.

This session flipped the script entirely.

As part of Mirchi’s innovative 'AI-Giri' campaign, the audience consisted of everyday radio listeners. These were people from all walks of life who had called into the station and were personally invited to the Film City studio for a face-to-face interaction with experts.

They weren't there because it was mandatory for a degree or a corporate upskilling program. They were there out of pure, unadulterated curiosity.

Democratizing the AI Conversation

For professionals and educators in the technology and communications space, speaking to this kind of audience is an incredibly rewarding challenge.

Every single person in that room consumes media during almost every waking second of their life. Yet, the backend mechanics—specifically how Artificial Intelligence is actively reshaping the media and communications ecosystem—are often locked behind technical jargon and industry gatekeeping.

My goal for the session was simple: unpack the complex, strip away the buzzwords and look at the real-world impact of AI on the stories we hear, the news we consume and the entertainment we love.

We didn't just talk about algorithms; we talked about the shifting climate of the invisible air we all breathe.

The Power of 'Out-of-the-Syllabus' Learning

Teaching this unconventional masterclass turned out to be a massive learning experience for me as well. It was incredibly dynamic and conversational.

The real magic happened during the Q&A. The sheer variety of questions brought to the table highlighted a fascinating mix of awe, skepticism and genuine eagerness to understand. When you remove the pressure of grades or corporate performance, you get raw, honest curiosity.

Full marks to the team at Mirchi for building such a novel platform. By bringing everyday media consumers into their studio to talk about the future.

I think they didn't just host a campaign—they bridged a massive digital divide.

If this masterclass taught me anything, it’s that the conversation around AI shouldn’t just happen in tech boardrooms. It belongs exactly where the media is consumed: with the people!
